calling all digicams...

hey everyone. i need as many ppl to chime in as possible. i know you ALL have digicams. my parents are looking for one. what do you have (model) and what you like/dislike about it? need to buy soon.

oh yeah.. i offered to lend them my rig, but my dad doesn't want anything too bulky.. so compacts generally.. may look at the G series, but probably too big.

(UPDATE)

hey folks, thanks for responding, but keep chiming in. everyone who has responded shoots with digital SLRS (which i find hilarious-but thanks for your detailed reports) =) i want every day users ("normal"), whether you shoot once a week or once a month...

I gave my Dad my SD400 which he has been happily using for almost a year now. He claims he's even getting better shots than my full dSLR setup.

I've been using the SD700 IS as my pocket camera which has been great too. The updated UI makes it easier to access all the features as well.

Both are great combination of size and functionality. Power consuption is also pretty good too. Definitely would recommend the SD series.

I like my camera. You know more than I do what it's called, but I think XT? It fits in my hand comfortably. It takes great shots even though the photographer has no skills. It's not too heavy either, unlike the tripod haha! I guessing that I'm not very helpful to you, sorry!!

doesnt want an SLR - get the SD700 (not the SD800). its the best of breed.

-big screen
-high optical quality (for a point and shoot)
-IS
-looks cool
-easy handling
-4x zoom

check out the dpreview and you'll agree as well.
the end.

matt, depending on what your parents want to spend on a p&s camera, you might want to consider the new release from canon, the sd800 which is an upgrade from the SD700 mentioned earlier. the main differences from the sd700 is that the lens is wider (at 28-105mm), the sensitivity is higher (1600 vs. 800), and the new digic III processor, which is supposed to be faster and more accurate processing, smarter AF, and saves on battery.

if you're looking for a wide-angle camera with IS and a lower price than canon (i'm pretty sure anyway), my dad got a panasonic one in the summer (i think it's the fx01) which was pretty good - until it fell in hot soup. it's not really heatproof. :oP

i've been debating about getting a new p&s for about a good half year, but the prices keep falling, and new features and cameras keep coming out. if canon came out with a water- and shockproof, wide-angle, super-compact camera with a huge screen and IS, i'd get it. but alas, i wait.

there's a reason we sold tonnes and tonnes of Canons when I was at Henry's =)

I'm going to agree with a poster above and throw in a vote for the Canon SD700is (but not the 800...higher pixel density = bad, see dpreview). Good IQ for this tier of camera, in-camera IS is a big plus when you've got such small apertures to work with, decently usable ISO400, big screen on the back, solid SD-series build.

If they want something more prosumer, the new Olympus ultra-zoom they announced is pretty tempting, tho not sure when that hits the market. G-series is still good, but not what it used to be =P Could also look at the S_ IS series as well.

I got the Canon SD630 last summer and it's wonderful =) Although it doesn't have a viewfinder....the 3" screen is quite useful :)

I'm trying to learn how to get into the d-SLRs but this is my little baby! I'd recommend it =)

I have a SD400 and I think its great for regular use, and I'm a big fan of portability so I like how it fits pretty comfortably in my pocket (although I sometimes wish I had something even thinner). However, my dad has an older A75 and he actually loves the bulkier, weightier design because he likes having the big grip and being able to 'feel' the camera...not to say I recommend the A75 per se, just throwing the anecdote out there.
Good luck!

All right, I'm a non-Canon user... personally thinking about getting the Panasonic Lumix (new one is F-50, I think). Though, the DPreviews said that the images were too soft for their liking, but the images from my friend are quite clear, probably because of the image-stabilizer. Also, it is wide angle. It's easy to use, (more so than the Casio, which I've been using), because the toggle menu is less easy to accidentally hit than the button menus (say for Exilim), which I still like but only because the "card" slim version is nice. haha. On an aside, I'm trying to get rid of a Nikon Coolpix S9... interested in a cheap one??

a friend and i were also looking at point and shoot digicams, and we had bought a luminex (as it was clearing out), but we soon found out that it didn't have a viewfinder, which i wasn't too keen on because i find that the viewfinder is pretty crucial for bright or dark light situations.

i've used fuji and now i have an older canon, and i must say that i seem to prefer canon more than fuji
